Pasadena
lies along the northern edge of the Los Angeles basin, in the foothills
of the San Gabriel Mountains. Pasadena occupies a comparatively quiet
corner of lively and marvelously diverse southern California. It is
the home of the Tournament of Roses and the Rose Bowl, and as such is
the focus of nationwide interest each New Year's Day.
Pasadena
is renowned for its moderate semiarid-to-subtropical climate. Daily
temperatures typically range from the 60s and 70s in the winter to the
80s and 90s in the summer. Rain is limited to the winter months, and
averages only about ten inches per year. At the extremes, temperatures
do occasionally reach the low 100s, at which time the humidity is invariably
very low; and occasionally snow can be seen on the San Gabriel Mountains.
Air quality in the region has continually improved since the late 1970s,
and smoggy days are now relatively infrequent.
Caltech
is situated in one of Pasadena's residential areas, a short walk from
restaurants, shopping centers, and cultural attractions. The Los Angeles
Civic Center which offers the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, the
Los Angeles Opera, and several world-class museums, is only ten miles
to the southwest.
There are
many opportunities for recreation and relaxation in and near Pasadena.
